Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 1998 - Christ the King Sunday, November 25, 2007
After a grueling week involving two surgeries and more than a few up's and down's, Meli died this morning around 10:40a at the vet's. He called me at 10:30a to let me know she wasn't doing well, and by the time I got there she was already gone.
She was fighting a battle on two fronts: both pancreatitis and some fabric that had wedged itself into two places--her stomach and her intestine. The two pieces didn't pass through her system (as others have) because they were attached to each other by a thread. When the intestines tried to move the pieces through, the thread sawed through the lining of the intestines. In the first surgery they removed two feet of bowel. Thanksgiving Day she appeared to be recovering well, but then on Friday there was a downturn. They did another surgery, thinking that there was a hole they may have missed. They found one spot, oversewed it, and yesterday she was a bit better. But by this morning it was obvious that all the stress had taken it's toll.
I can't begin to describe my grief. She has been the one constant in my life in the past 9 years. She and I have lived in 7 different places. She has kept me going, made me laugh, hiked with me all over the state.
This house feels very empty today.
So does my soul.

Ahhhh, you lost your best friend, and it hurts so much. But, in time, the grief will end, and you will find a way to go on without her. She was so beautiful, and I understand your sadness. Make sure to celebrate her life, and make a marker with her name on it. Cry and grieve all that you need to, and one day another pretty girl will come your way and make you smile again.
